You don't want to mess with the guys at Mississauga's Kombat Arts Training Academy.
The facility, which has hosted clinics by highly regarded mixed martial arts fighters George St. Pierre and B.J. Penn the last couple of years, has its own formidable fighter in Brampton's John Roche.
Roche, 30, who sports an amateur record of 5-0, won the Ground and Pound Promotions championship belt in the 155-pound division over the weekend (May 29-31) in Michigan.
Coach Joey de Los Reyes, who owns Kombat Arts, said he was particularly impressed with Roche's arm-bar submission win in the first-round over Nate Cooper because his fighter had to hang tough when the match wasn't going his way early on.
"When things weren't going well for John, he didn't give up and that's the mark of a true champion," said de Los Reyes. "I was a little surprised by the way he won, but he showed he's been working on his grappling and improving. Right now, he's been working more on his technical game, but he's a good athlete with a great mindset."
Roche has been training at Kombat Arts since January 2008 and started competing last July.
"I remember the first day John walked through that door," said de Los Reyes. "I knew right away that he had that thing, that spark, that something special. But he has taken off and surpassed even my expectations. Now, less than a year after his first fight, we are training to defend his championship belt. He's one step closer to going pro and for John it's more than just a dream or aspiration, it's really just a matter of time."
The gym, which has a stable of about 20 amateur fighters and offers classes in mixed martial arts, Muay Thai kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, boxing and conditioning, has had much success lately. In February, Kevin Nabbie, Sylwester Organka and Julian della Vedova walked away with trophies and gold medals from the Council of Amateur Sport Kickboxing National championships in Burlington while another fighter, Brian Beauchamp, won a pair of gold medals at an international Jiu Jitsu championship in Los Angeles in April.
Another fighter, Corey Bresson, is heading to Ohio this weekend to compete in the North American Allied Fight Series' amateur mixed martial arts championship.
